Well-known Michigan lawyer Dana Nessel spent her first 11 years as an attorney as an assistant prosecutor with the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office. During that time Dana racked up an overwhelming conviction record while honing her skills as a litigator, trying hundreds of felony cases. She received assignments in the child abuse unit, where she specialized in “shaken baby” cases, as a specially assigned prosecutor handling homicides, and the police misconduct unit. However, in 2005, after 11 years of public service, Dana decided that it was time to leave the prosecutor’s office and enter the world of private practice.
During the next several years Dana advanced her legal skills in the areas of constitutional law, family law, and general tort litigation – all the while handling cases that garnered massive media attention. Dana also earned multiple impressive settlements in civil cases involving police misconduct. Eventually her practice became too much to handle alone and Dana began looking for a potential partner.
After spending three years working with the Wayne County branch of the Legal Aid & Defender Association (aka Wayne County Public Defender’s Office), Michigan lawyer Chris Kessel was approached by Dana about joining her firm. During his time with Legal Aid, Chris handled hundreds of criminal cases, culminating in dozens of trials involving everything from gun and drug possession to carjacking and armed robbery—making him the ideal candidate for partnership in this newly formed criminal defense and family law firm.
In 2012, Nessel & Kessel Law was established. In their relatively short time together, Dana and Chris have tackled issues and cases that many other attorneys might shy away from. Dana has led the charge against discrimination against gays and lesbians with a case challenging Michigan’s ban on same-sex marriage. This case has received national attention, allowing the Nessel & Kessel name to reach all corners of the United States. Chris has handled trials involving, among other things, criminal sexual conduct and homicide charges. He has also become well versed in the areas of family law, probate matters, and police misconduct.
Nessel & Kessel Law has become one of Michigan’s top criminal defense firms and general litigation experts. We have a record for fighting for our clients and gaining excellent outcomes. Let us help you get the results you deserve.
